Majors & Minors

The Department of Philosophy at Providence College offers both a Major and a Minor in Philosophy and Minors in both the Philosophy of Mind & Cognition and Ethics & Society.

Declare Your Major or Minor

The Philosophy Major (BA)

Study every major era of philosophical thought; ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary, plus ethics, logic, and metaphysics. Rooted in PC’s Catholic and Dominican tradition, the major pairs naturally with a second major or minor in any field. Whether you’re heading to law school, medicine, graduate study, or business, philosophy gives you the foundational skills to think and act well.

Mind & Cognition Minor

Explore the nature of the mind, consciousness, knowledge, and human experience.

The Minor in Philosophy of Mind & Cognition gives students the opportunity to explore some of the most fascinating questions at the intersection of philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and cognitive science. What is consciousness? How are the mind and brain related? How do we understand thought, perception, knowledge, language, and the minds of others?

Designed especially to complement majors in Neuroscience and Psychology, the minor is open to students in all disciplines who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the mind and the philosophical questions surrounding human cognition and experience.

Ethics & Society Minor

Explore the ethical questions shaping our professions, communities, and society.

The Minor in Ethics & Society gives students the opportunity to examine the ethical, political, and social questions that arise in contemporary life. How should individuals, businesses, healthcare professionals, and institutions make difficult decisions? What do we owe one another? What makes a society just? How should we think about leadership, responsibility, equality, and the common good?

Designed especially to complement majors in Business, Economics, Global Studies, Health Sciences, and Political Science, the minor is open to students in all disciplines. Through philosophical study, students develop skills in critical thinking, ethical reasoning, careful analysis, and persuasive argument while exploring issues directly connected to their academic and professional interests.
