Phi Sigma Tau

Phi Sigma Tau is the International Honor Society in Philosophy. Founded in 1930 and incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in 1955, the Society now has a network of over 230 chapters throughout the United States, at both public and private institutions of higher learning. The purpose of Phi Sigma Tau is to encourage interest and activity among students and to promote ties between philosophy departments in accredited institutions. Phi Sigma Tau publishes a journal, Dialogue, for student contributions in all areas of contemporary philosophical research. Other PST publications include the PST Newsletter (published three times yearly) and the National Alumni Chapter Bulletin. The PST Newsletter is sent to all students and alumni/ae members and contains news of local chapter activities. The National Alumni Chapter (NAC) provides a medium of exchange and communication for onetime PST members who desire to retain their affiliation with the Society following graduation.

What is an honor society? 

The seventy honor societies that make up the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) are as divergent as knowledge itself. From forestry to physics, from highly specialized to general areas, these member organizations exist for one basic purpose — to further scholarship and achievement in the academic areas of their members, thereby providing a forum where interested and competent students may communicate and exchange ideas with faculty and students of similar interest on their own campus and throughout the world.

Awards

Fr. Cassidy Award for Excellence in Original and Scholarly Research in Moral Philosophy

The Fr. Cassidy Award for Excellence in Original and Scholarly Research in Moral Philosophy recognizes outstanding undergraduate scholarship in ethics and is awarded to the author of an exceptional paper in the field of moral philosophy.

To be eligible for consideration, a student must be a senior at Providence College, and the submitted paper must have earned a grade of A or A- in an ethics course taken at Providence College. The paper may have been completed during any semester of the student’s undergraduate studies and does not need to have been written during the current academic year.

Lisska Award

Established through the generosity of Anthony Lisska ’63 and Lawrence Lisska ’66, the Lisska Award recognizes outstanding student scholarship at Providence College.

Each year, two prizes are awarded: one for an exceptional paper in Philosophy and one for an exceptional paper in Theology, written at Providence College during the preceding academic year.

The Philosophy Department selects the recipient of the Philosophy prize, honoring a student whose work demonstrates excellence in philosophical inquiry, thoughtful analysis, and scholarly writing.

Alumni

A degree in philosophy prepares students for much more than a single career path. Providence College Philosophy alumni bring the skills developed through philosophical study, including critical thinking, careful analysis, clear communication, and thoughtful engagement with complex questions, into a wide range of professions and pursuits.

Our graduates have gone on to careers in law, business, education, healthcare, public service, nonprofit organizations, and other fields, as well as to graduate and professional study. Whatever path they choose, they leave Providence College with the ability to ask meaningful questions, consider different perspectives, construct sound arguments, and communicate their ideas with clarity.

Where Can Philosophy Take You?

The better question might be: Where do you want to go?

Philosophy provides a foundation for lifelong learning and for navigating a world that increasingly values people who can think critically, communicate clearly, recognize assumptions, and approach difficult questions from multiple perspectives.
